PRA-40 is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) containing Pantoprazole, widely used for reducing stomach acid production and treating acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. It works by inhibiting the proton pumps in the stomach lining, thereby decreasing acid secretion and providing relief from conditions like GERD, ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Indications:

PRA-40 is prescribed for the treatment of:

Acid-Related Disorders in Humans:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) – Chronic acid reflux causing heartburn and irritation.
  • Peptic Ulcers – Stomach and duodenal ulcers caused by excess acid or H. pylori infection.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome – A rare condition causing excessive acid secretion due to gastrin-secreting tumors.
  • Erosive Esophagitis – Inflammation and damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Route:Oral, to be taken before meals for maximum absorption.
  • Dosage:
    • Adults: 40 mg once daily, or as directed by a physician.
    • Severe cases:May be increased to 80 mg per day under medical supervision.
    • Children (above 5 years): Dosage based on body weight and medical advice.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Not recommended for long-term use without a doctor’s supervision.
  • Avoid in patients with severe liver disease unless prescribed with dose adjustments.
  • May reduce calcium and magnesium absorption with prolonged use, leading to deficiencies.
  • Should not be taken simultaneously with antacids, as they may reduce its effectiveness.
